David Lewis Taylor is a well known photographer based in New York City, specializing in still life, product, jewelry and interior photography. His clients include numerous magazine publishers, advertising agencies, leading interior designers and creative entrepreneurs. We have asked him to share this collection of pictures that expresses the ‘Grit’ of New York City.
‘My street photography is a personal visual diary. Each image is more than just a register of a time and place, as I remember the dramatic convergence of the many elements in each image. I strive to produce captivating compositions with intriguing layers of mysteries, abandonment, isolation, joy, curiosity and confusion. With New York City as my home, I often find the competition between people and the harsh beauty of the city to be a timeless metaphor. Shooting for this collection of images alongside my studio photography is invigorating and complements its precise nature.
On the street the canvas may present one of the following: a shaft of light between building, an over lit storefront, a shade dabbled handball court, the graphic white lines on asphalt streets, or imposing architecture. Once I've chosen a canvas I will wait for the subject. In other cases I spot the subject first and find ways to capture it best. I'll shoot the subject multiple times, choosing among subtle variations in gesture and composition for the final image. Shooting street photography reminds me of my awe-struck discovery of a very gritty metropolis, at the time of my rhapsodic arrival in New York City with a film camera in hand.’ - David Lewis Taylor
